Penpals for Palestine! is an experimental correspondence art exchange highlighting the voices of the youth of Philly and the youth of Jericho. Our approach to this project is rooted in bridging communities through mindful self expression and providing tactile learning environments. We aim to foster agency, self awareness and community centered in art and language.
Donate here to help keep programs free. Currently, we are raising funds to pay for background check clearances so we can bring these workshops to our partner site, Al Bustan's summer camp at Germantown Friends Meeting in Philadelphia, this June 2025.
This project has four phases. We are currently approaching phase one
1st Phase--Saturday, May 31st, 1-4pm, Workshop at Big Ramp gallery 2024 East Westmoreland, Philly 19134, for the closing of Kim Altomare and Melina Ausikaitis exhibition curated by Michelle Anne Harris, Air Alone (from my dreams) on with papermaking, paintmaking, postcards, and eco wheatpasting-- facilitated by Kim Altomare, Cindy Stockton Moore, Sunny Hsu and Michelle Anne Harris, with directive prompts remotely provided by Yaqeen Yamani and the Jericho Cinema Club. Suitable for ages 0-100
Additionally, as a part of phase one, a Language & Dance workshop will be held at Al Bustan's summer camp between June 16-27th, under the theme of Inventions as expressed through movement and poetry, facilitated by Donia Salem Harhoor and Christina Gesualdi, with support by Sunny Hsu and Michelle Anne Harris.
2nd Phase--* Pop-Up Postcards at *H&H books Suitable for ages 0-100, date to. be determined.

Phase 1 & 2 will serve as advertisements for the Clubhouse Memberships for youths ages 7-18 and their families.
Potential Clubhouse Members must receive permission from their parent/guardian and fill out the inquiry form. Space is limited.

3rd Phase--OPEN CALL Clubhouse Creative Members and Children's Community Library is an extension of Penpals for Palestine! This program is a community, experimental art and language meeting space for youths ages 7-18 and their families who are members of the Penpals for Palestine Club (see contact form). This is the homebase for Penpals for Palestine! located in Olde Kensington inside the Button Factory, Philly, Pa, 19122 This aspect is an exchange between youths of Philly and youths of Jericho. Topics include--art games, comic book zines, printmaking, papermaking and poetry performances, with the opportunity for clubhouse members to have their work exhibited in a traveling exhibition and submitted for printed publication.
4th Phase--Traveling Exhibition the products of these workshops, correspondence exchanges and clubhouse meetings will be curated into a global traveling exhibition. Details coming soon!

Penpals for Palestine! is a mobile art & language project developed by Philadelphia based artists Michelle Anne Harris and Kim Altomare in collaboration with Jericho based artist Yaqeen Yamani, with much support provided by The Nava Center, Head and the Hand Bookstore, Circle Thrift and Velocity Fund organization in Philly, Pa.
Between April 2025-February 2026, Harris and Altomare will facilitate community workshops throughout Philadelphia to create handmade books and paper art that will be exchanged as prompts for reactions, built layer by layer, collaboratively with Yamani and the Jericho Cinema Club.
